I recently discovered that my LG G7 smartphone’s camera uses more manual settings than most smartphones on the market today. I can change the ISO, aperture and shutter speed as I wish. The video quality is comparable to that of a DSLR camera from the early 2000s. To see some of these photos and videos, you can visit my Instagram account @UGLYPIXELICIOUS. Instagram doesn’t offer the same editing features as Adobe Lightroom and Premiere, so I prefer the Adobe applications to edit photos and videos. If you are just starting out and don’t want to pay the Adobe subscription, then you can try Snapseed. For Androids and iPhones, Snapseed is a freeware app that offers more editing features than Instagram. Using Instagram and then Snapseed helped me learn the basics before I transitioned into Adobe Lightroom for more editing capabilities.
When I first saw this scene on the street, I thought of the dreamy streetscape setting I could create in post production editing. After using the bokeh effect for each streetlight on my initial photograph, I was able to upload the picture and edit it to increase the dreamy escape I had first visualized. In a way, the scene reminded me of the classic noir style seen in classics like Dick Tracy. To do so, I increased the highlight, exposure and white sliders on Lightroom. Then, I decreased the black and shadow sliders. Lastly, I softened the clarity and sharpness of the image to feather the grainy noise. This creates a smoother resolution and eliminated the initial crisp focus of the highlights in this scene. For the composition, I arranged the faint lines from the wall on the left, the straight awning lines and the light pole lines to lead the viewer’s eyes towards the faint figure standing on the sidewalk.
